The quiet red color know as vermillion is traditional in Japan and was associated with the noble class. This is in excellent condition with no stains or soiling on either the lining or the outside. The pattern shows an ox-drawn carriage of the sort nobles would have ridden in during the Heian Period, an auspicious image, producing a beautifully elegant and refined design. The Haura (lining of the Haori) shows a "Daimyo's Procession", in which a feudal lord walks with his retinue in attendance, as drawn for children. With the ox-drawn carriage on the outside and the Daimyo's Procession on the lining, the images inside and out combine to tell a single tale in a masterful design in the Japanese "Iki" tradition.
